Fun App - could be better

I like putting the phone on my dashboard while driving in the mountains. Works pretty well with the exception of the compass heading which is frequently way off and unreliable. I would think it should be pretty easy to get a much more accurate heading especially when using GPS to derive it. Considering this why does it want to calibrate the phones magnetic compass at times?
